About event
On December 22 at 6:00 PM, the Lviv Culture Hub (6 Kniazia Romana St., 2nd floor) will host a screening and discussion of the Spanish feature film Sorda (Deaf), directed by Eva Libertad. This sensitive melodrama explores motherhood, love, and the search for mutual understanding in a world where the experience of silence becomes a fully fledged language of communication.
The film tells the story of Ángela, a woman with a hearing impairment, and her partner Héctor. The couple live in mutual love and eagerly await the birth of their child, but the arrival of the baby brings new and complex challenges. Ángela cannot hear the baby’s cry and, in everyday childcare, becomes dependent on her partner — the infant’s only connection to the world of sound. Doubts about her ability to be a good mother push her to seek her own path to her daughter, proving to herself and others that true love and care do not require hearing.
In 2025, the film was presented for the first time at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received the Panorama Audience Award and the CICAE Award from the International Confederation of Art Cinemas. The film also triumphed at the Málaga Film Festival, winning top awards including Best Film, Best Spanish Film, Best Debut, Best Actress, Best Actor, and the Audience Award. In addition, Sorda was screened in the official programs of the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
After the screening at the Lviv Cultural Hub, there will be a discussion moderated by Oleh Yaskiv.
Oleh Yaskiv is a film scholar and critic. He is the Director of the Sheptytsky Center for Culture and Information, teaches courses on philosophy, culture, and cinema, and is the founder and editor-in-chief of the website Prostir Kino (Cinema Space). He also works as a documentary film director and producer.
The event will be accessible for deaf and hard of hearing people. Both the film screening and the subsequent discussion will be accompanied by two-way interpretation in Ukrainian Sign Language.
The open conversation after the screening will provide a space for sharing feelings and emotions evoked by the film, as well as for discussing communication barriers, experiences of otherness, mutual dependence, and the search for a common language between people with different life experiences.
Seats are limited. Registration for the event.
